Day One: We started our morning together by flitting away our first day jitters. We read the story "First Day Jitters" by Julie Dannenberg and drank some "Jitter Juice" a.k.a. strawberry-kiwi lemonade. We took a tour of our classroom and learned about the different places and spaces available to use in room 204. Then, we read "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn and went on a scavenger hunt around the school to find the most important places for us to know as new students! The students were then able to attend gym for the first time to meet Mr. Conroy and Ms. Theresa! After specials, we return to the classroom to learn about classroom rules using the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud. We learned some hand motions to help us remember our classroom rules and practiced our Bucket Filler pledge. I then explained the classroom behavior system (clip chart). At the end of the day, we practiced identifying actions as being those of either a bucket dipper (rule breaker) or a bucket filler (rule follower). Day Two: As a continuation of our focus on citizenship, we read the story "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes. Each child was given a construction paper heart and asked to crinkle the heart each time a character said something unkind about Chrysanthemum. Towards the end of story, I began asking the students to try to flatten the heart each time a character said something kind to Chrysanthemum. After the story, we had a great discussion about the ways in which words can hurt, even after an apology; we all agreed that we must be careful how we treat one another, because our actions cannot be taken back. Later, we learned how to use glee by making a shredded paper collage of our names! Students enjoyed their first music class with Ms. Shoremount and were able to earn a sticker towards a reward for good behavior! GO KINDERGARTEN! When we returned from specials, we read the story "Miss Kindergarten Gets Ready For Kindergarten" by Joseph Slate and participated in a shared writing activity in which each student was able to share how they prepared for their first day of kindergarten! At the end of the day, we began to learn each others names by playing "Hickety Pickety Bumble Bee". Day Three: We started our morning by playing "Hickety Pickety Bumblee Bee". Later, we learned the rules and procedures for using scissors. We ended our day by listening to the story "Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon" by Patty Lovell and drew self-portraits of ourselves to show the things we love about ourselves. Day Four: On Friday, we read the story "The Crayon Box That Talked" by Shane DeRolf and talked about how each of us is different and that it makes our class special. Like a crayon box, we would not be as interesting or beautiful if we were all the same! Students participated in their first computer class with Ms. Ashley! When we returned from specials, students listened to and participated in an active read aloud of "Brown Bear Brown Bear" by Eric Carle. Students were then asked to retell the story by coloring each of the animals the color they were in the story. Students used their coloring to create a Brown Bear paper bag craft! At the end of the day, we met our third grade reading buddies from Ms. Klondar's class! We learned each other's names, practiced being partners, and created paper representations of ourselves to hang in the hallway! I'm looking forward to a great year together!
